Mace® Brand Nite Beams LED products help bicycle race crew safely complete cross-country trek

CLEVELAND (July 20, 2015) — How do you keep a bicycle rider and support crew safe while racing across the country, often along dark highways with poor visibility?

That was exactly the problem facing participants in the Race Across America (RAAM), a 3,000-mile cross-country race starting in Oceanside, Calif. and finishing in Annapolis, Md. Riders are accompanied by their support crews consisting of drivers, mechanics, medical specialists and others, who all need to be ready to spring into action at a moment’s notice, around the clock.

At night, along busy highways, safety is a constant concern. That’s why the crew of racer Brian Toone wore Mace® Brand Nite Beams LED accessories.

“If I need something, they had to hop out of the car on the spot,” Toone says. “When you’re in and out of a car on the side of the road like that, visibility is extremely important.”

Toone’s crew maintained visibility by wearing Nite Beams arm bands, leg bands and ball caps, each outfitted with a bright, highly visible LED beam, alerting teammates — and even more important, passing drivers — of their locations.

“I rode for at least part of the night, every night of the race, so they were all out there with me at whatever hour of the day I was riding,” Toone says. “They’re my supporters and my motivators. I need them out there with me, and I need them to be safe.”

Equipped with Nite Beams accessories, Toone’s crew helped him finish seventh in his first Race Across America, with a time of 10 days, 14 hours and 20 minutes.

“All of us on the team were rookies as far as the RAAM goes,” Toone says. “I think our Mace equipment helped give us some peace of mind knowing that we were being as safe as we could out there. Our equipment helped us get to the finish line, and get there in one piece.”

Mace Security International Adds Terrance W. Gainer To Board Of Directors

Former U.S. Senate Sergeant at Arms Brings Significant Law Enforcement Experience to Role

CLEVELAND – (July 14, 2015) – Mace Security International, Inc. (OTCMKTS: MACE) today announced that it has named Terrance W. Gainer to its Board of Directors, effective July 14, 2015. Gainer (67) brings nearly 50 years of national and international law enforcement experience to the company.  The addition of Gainer, who will stand for election at the 2016 Annual Meeting of Shareholders, increases the company’s independent Board of Directors to six members.

“Without question, Terry Gainer is one of the nation’s preeminent security experts,” said Richard A. Barone, chairman. “His vast and diverse experience will be invaluable to us as we aggressively pursue the growth agenda for our recently launched Mace Tactical Solutions division that designs and produces non-lethal products for the government, law enforcement and military sectors under the Take Down® brand.”

Since retiring as the 38th United States Senate Sergeant at Arms in 2014, Gainer has been the chief executive officer of a private consulting business that designs innovative law enforcement programs that support military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.  During his tenure as Sergeant at Arms, he was appointed a Commissioner on the Independent Commission on the Security Forces of Iraq, charged with conducting an independent assessment of the Iraqi Security Forces and reporting the findings to Congress. He also served with the Special Envoy for Middle East Regional Security, which was created to advance the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian dispute by assisting in strengthening security institutions.

From 2002 to 2006, he served as the Chief of the United States Capitol Police in the District of Columbia. Under his leadership, the Capitol’s police force nearly doubled in size and expanded its anti-terrorism responsibilities in order to properly protect the Capitol’s physical footprint of the nearly 8 million square feet of office space and 275 acres, as well as the elected officials, Congressional staff members, and the millions visitors it receives each year.

From 1998 to 2002, Gainer served as Executive Assistant Chief of Police for the Metropolitan Police Department in the District. In this role, he was responsible for the law enforcement operations of the Department, as well as led the Department’s efforts in a cooperative interaction with the Department of Justice.

Gainer began his law enforcement career as a police officer in the Chicago Police Department, where he rose through the ranks to homicide detective and then sergeant before, ultimately, being appointed chief legal counsel for the department.  After 20 years with the Chicago Police Department, he served as the director of the Illinois State Police from 1991 to 1998.

A native of Chicago, he is a decorated veteran who served in Vietnam and retired as a Captain in the United States Navy Reserve. Gainer received his Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Saint Benedict’s College, a Master of Science and a Juris Doctor degree from DePaul University. He is married and has six children and 14 grandchildren. He is the past commissioner of the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), a board member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and member of the Police Executive Research Forum.

Mace® Brand Nite Beams Wearable LED Accessories Keep Cyclist and Crew Safe During Cross-Country Race

CLEVELAND (July 9, 2015) — The Race Across America is one of the most challenging bicycle races in the world, traversing a 3,000-mile course from Oceanside, California, to Annapolis, Maryland. Four-person teams ride in shifts around the clock, necessitating high-visibility personal safety equipment for both the riders and their support crews, which trail the riders in supply vans.

To meet their personal safety needs, the four-woman Sorella RAAM Team relied on Mace® Brand Nite Beams wearable LED products.

The Sorella RAAM Team’s 13-member support crew included drivers, navigators, mechanics and other support staff, all of whom used Mace Brand Nite Beams LED armbands and ball caps during the challenging overnight portions of the race. Nite Beams provided crewmembers with enhanced personal safety on dark roads, and the high LED visibility allowed the cyclists and crewmembers to identify teammates at a glance.

“We used white LEDs on all of our night safety equipment,” said Sorella cyclist Betty Jean Jordan. “When we saw the white LEDs on the road, we instantly knew it was a member of our team. It was important, particularly at rider transitions, because in the dark, you can’t really see the fabric of a person’s clothes. You need another identifier, and that’s what the Mace product did for us.”

With the help of Nite Beams, the Sorella RAAM Team finished second in the under-50 four-person female relay category, completing the race in seven days, seven hours and 21 minutes.

“I’ve been a bicycle racer for about eight years, but this is the first time I had ever done something this demanding,” Jordan said. “It’s a major time investment to train and prepare, and you want to make sure you have everything you need to make the experience a fulfilling and successful one. Our night visibility equipment from Mace played a major role in our success as a team.”
