Mace® Brand Nite Beams Wearable LED Accessories Keep Cyclist and Crew Safe During Cross-Country Race
CLEVELAND (July 9, 2015) — The Race Across America is one of the most challenging bicycle races in the world, traversing a 3,000-mile course from Oceanside, California, to Annapolis, Maryland. Four-person teams ride in shifts around the clock, necessitating high-visibility personal safety equipment for both the riders and their support crews, which trail the riders in supply vans.
To meet their personal safety needs, the four-woman Sorella RAAM Team relied on Mace® Brand Nite Beams wearable LED products.
The Sorella RAAM Team’s 13-member support crew included drivers, navigators, mechanics and other support staff, all of whom used Mace Brand Nite Beams LED armbands and ball caps during the challenging overnight portions of the race. Nite Beams provided crewmembers with enhanced personal safety on dark roads, and the high LED visibility allowed the cyclists and crewmembers to identify teammates at a glance.
“We used white LEDs on all of our night safety equipment,” said Sorella cyclist Betty Jean Jordan. “When we saw the white LEDs on the road, we instantly knew it was a member of our team. It was important, particularly at rider transitions, because in the dark, you can’t really see the fabric of a person’s clothes. You need another identifier, and that’s what the Mace product did for us.”
With the help of Nite Beams, the Sorella RAAM Team finished second in the under-50 four-person female relay category, completing the race in seven days, seven hours and 21 minutes.
“I’ve been a bicycle racer for about eight years, but this is the first time I had ever done something this demanding,” Jordan said. “It’s a major time investment to train and prepare, and you want to make sure you have everything you need to make the experience a fulfilling and successful one.
